The Hidden Wilderness of the Hills

Meghalaya is rapidly becoming one of the most popular destinations in Northeast India. Every winter, thousands of tourists crowd the viewpoints of Shillong, walk the main street of Mawlynnong, and paddle on the Umngot River at Dawki. While these locations are undeniably beautiful, they represent only a fraction of the region's geographic diversity. The true spirit of the Khasi, Jaintia, and Garo Hills lies in the quiet, forested valleys and deep river canyons that remain untouched by commercial tourism.

This guide is written for active travelers who want to venture off the beaten path. We highlight lesser-known spots like the river caves of Krem Chyrpe, the secluded border drop of Loban Falls, the deep canyons of Wahri Chora, and the limestone caverns of Garo Hills' Siju Cave. Visiting these areas requires a willingness to walk, hike, and camp under the guidance of native community coordinators.

Krem Chyrpe: A Journey into the Earth

Meghalaya contains the longest and deepest cave systems in India, carved out of the region's massive limestone formations. While tourist caving is typically limited to the lit walkways of Mawsmai Cave, Krem Chyrpe offers a raw, unlit spelunking experience. Located in the Jaintia Hills, the cave entrance is hidden in a dense forest gorge.

Inside, the cave opens into massive chambers filled with ancient stalactites, stalagmites, and delicate rock formations. A river flows through the cave bed, requiring you to wade through knee-deep water in some sections. Spelunking here is an immersive, silent experience; once you turn off your headlamps, the darkness is complete, broken only by the sound of dripping water. We coordinate with local Jaintia caving guides who provide safety gear, helmets, and headlamps for this route.

Loban Falls: The Secluded Border Cascade

While Sohra is famous for its waterfalls, they are often viewed from crowded concrete decks. Loban Falls, situated close to the southern border plains, remains almost entirely unvisited. The waterfall is a broad, multi-tiered drop that cascades over a series of dark sandstone shelves into a wide, quiet pool surrounded by tropical vegetation.

Reaching Loban Falls requires a moderate trek along a local path used by forest foragers. The trail winds through betel leaf plantations and crosses bamboo footbridges over small streams. The reward is a completely private jungle pool where you can swim and rest without another tourist in sight. Because this spot is located close to the border area, having a local driver guide who is familiar with the village routes is essential.

To see how we integrate these off-grid spots, check out the *Off-Beat Places* section on our Meghalaya Highlands Circuit Itinerary.

Wahri Chora: Canoeing the Hidden Canyon

Wahri Chora is a deep, narrow sandstone canyon located in the West Jaintia Hills. The canyon walls rise vertically on both sides, covered in moss and ferns, blocking out most of the direct sunlight. A clear, slow-moving river flows through the bottom of the canyon.

The only way to explore Wahri Chora is by paddling. We coordinate with local village youth groups who maintain traditional wooden canoes at the entrance to the canyon. Paddling through the narrow, high walls is a serene, mystical experience, reminiscent of a pre-historic landscape. The canyon eventually opens up into a wider valley where you can camp on the clean sandy riverbanks.

Siju Cave: The Bat Cave of the Garo Hills

Located in the Garo Hills sector on the western side of the state, Siju Cave (known locally as the Bat Cave) is one of the most famous limestone caves in the region but remains unvisited by most tourists due to the driving distance from Shillong. The cave entrance is a wide arch in a limestone cliff face, from which a cold mountain stream flows.

Siju is home to massive colonies of bats, and the cave floor contains deep layers of organic sand. As you wade deeper into the cave, you pass through chambers with names like the 'Princess Di's Chamber' and cross natural limestone bridges suspended over the subterranean stream. The cave goes deep into the mountain, and exploring it requires proper local guides who understand the water flow and bat activity patterns.

Responsible Off-Grid Travel Guidelines

  • Hire Local Guides: Never attempt to enter caves like Krem Chyrpe or Siju, or trek to Loban Falls, without a local guide from the nearby village. The weather can change rapidly, and cave water levels can rise unexpectedly.
  • Support Homestays: When visiting off-beat spots, choose to stay in local family homestays. This ensures your travel funds directly benefit the community hosting you.
  • Leave No Trace: These areas are pristine. Pack out all plastic waste, respect sacred community forests, and leave the rock formations untouched.

No specialized training is needed, but you must be in good physical health and comfortable walking on uneven, wet surfaces and wading through shallow water. We provide helmets, headlamps, and experienced local guides.

Siju is located in the South Garo Hills, which is about a 6 to 7-hour drive from Shillong. Due to the distance, we recommend planning a dedicated 2-day loop in the Garo Hills rather than trying to visit as a day trip.

Yes, they are highly safe, but we recommend booking as part of a driver-guided plan rather than exploring alone. Local driver-guides act as translators and ensure the village councils are informed of your arrival.
